I’ve noted in several past posts that I’m strongly in favor of doing away with identity-based pluralism in favor of a concept of political activism rooted in privation and ethical utility; in other words, I think political struggle should be, on the most fundamental level, about what matters to you, not about who you are.
In that sense, the question of participation is a question of relevance. At what point does a given political struggle begin to affect your life? Do the inflated, insane bonuses of Wall Street executives matter to you? Does the fact that a corporation has the same legal rights as an individual matter to you? Does the fact that ranking police offers in a major metropolitan city think it’s “appropriate” to mace peaceful protesters matter to you?
