The abandonment of so many people in the very cells to which our society deemed it necessary to confine them is a horrible blip in what otherwise seems to have been a pretty well-coordinated effort to prepare a vulnerable city for a natural disaster.
The most essential first step to producing an immanent ethics based in activity is developing an adequate understanding of the limit between those things for which our bodies as individual entities can be the sufficient cause, and those things for which our bodies as individual entities cannot be the sufficient cause (note that I deliberately say “our bodies” rather than “our wills” or “we” as unitary subjects).
Just as attaining an adequate understanding of our own capacities requires giving up the illusion that we have power over forces that are beyond our control, so too does it equally require giving up our illusions about the way we are or aren’t determined by those same forces to act in a particular manner. One thing’s for certain: nobody named “Irene” made the city of New York shut down its public transportation system at exactly 12 noon on Saturday the 27th of August.
Render unto Bloomberg that which is Bloomberg’s.
